@norman5757 You're not burning 1200 calories running 3 miles. You MAY be burning 400.

agreed. long periods of cardio can create overproduction of cortisol which can lead to other health problems.

Hey steve quick question. I am not overweight. infact I weight about 10 pounds underweight than what I should be. Can I do HIIT right away for 10-15 minutes 3-4 times a day and expect results quicker ? or do I need to gradually move my way up. I dont excercise very often. I am just inspired to become more efficent in my body composition.

it depends. find out your resting heart rate, then google heart rate equation/calculator whatever and then find your heart rate ranges.. typically, 120-140 is said to be optimum for aerobic conditioning, but thats only a guidline. work out your own ;)
(i realize that 5 months on, you probably have an answer :P just in case though!)

Currently I weigh 240 and stand at 5'10, i'm wondering, for a person who has a healthy heart, whats a good heart rate to maintain during a cardio workout? Mine tends to fluctuate between 140 - 210 while i'm on treadmill. I'm also 65 pounds overweight.

@norman5757 the tread mills exagerate on calories burned i also used to walk /jog for 3 1/2 miles for 45 minutes it would say i burned about 1000 calories my gym trainer told me it was wrong probably more like 300- 350 calories

I'm overweight but it's only because I've been slacking. But I've been hitting the gym for about a month now and I've been wondering...Can I still lift heavy for muscle growth and do cardio for 30 minutes after for 4 days a week followed by a calorie deficient diet? I'm eating 5 meals a day. I get 150g of protein a day, 150-180g of carbs a day, and maybe 15g of fat a day.

Fell for these traps, i was losing weight and said "Heeyyy i haven't looked thin in a long time" so i started slacking and now it's "ahhh beer belly!!" Also i would do cardio every day for half an hour but now i get lazy to do it, then i say "i will make it up tomorrow" but now it's even longer so you don't want to do it. The hard part is getting on because after 10 minutes of warmup you are good to go, cutting it into smaller pieces makes sense if you have to
not have run for 20 + years and overweight , been weight training for 21/2 months and walking, now starting to run but joints hurt{ankles, knees, hips}any suggestions? { I can run a block and walk 1 or 2 and repeat my route is approx. 4.5 miles that I do 3 to 5 times a week} I will add that when I started I weighed 260 lbs and now down to 230lbs @5ft 10in
