I did get to speak briefly with Max Roach before he died. He said Bird liked minor triads because he liked to play a major seventh over them. He didn't use thirteenth chords because he liked to play the thirteenth himself. I mentioned the live version of My Little Suede Shoes and how Bird seems to be playing unaltered scales over the flat nine chords. Max said that Bird and the guitarist disagreed - Bird said the notes you played didn't have to be in the chord & the guitarist said they did.
