Zinedine Yazid Zidane (French pronunciation: [zinedin jazid zidan]) (born 23 June 1972) is a retired French World Cup-winning footballer of Kabyle (Algerian) Muslim heritage. Zidane played for club teams in France, Italy and Spain, and was the captain of the French national team. He is widely considered as one of the greatest players in the history of football. He was the iconic figure of a generation of French players that won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship. After a brief international retirement, Zidane returned to the national team in 2005 and captained France to the 2006 World Cup Final where he won the Golden Ball as the tournament's most outstanding player.
At club level he won the 2002 UEFA Champions League and a La Liga title with Real Madrid, and two Serie A league championships with Juventus. Zidane and Ronaldo are the only three-time FIFA World Player of the Year winners; Zidane also won the Ballon d'Or in 1998. He retired from professional football after the 2006 World Cup
