In the first part of this video there is a feet exercise that really helps to develop foot technique. It can be done on the pedals or without the pedals. The exercise is helpful to develop the muscles and develop precision even when you are not playing the pedals.

The exercise is: Right Foot Heel Up, Left Foot Heel Up, Right Foot Toe Up, Left Foot Toe Up.

This is the first step to develop a foot technique that I got from Steve Gadd. Some drummers call it rocking motion technique. It is a nice way to play single strokes with a single or a double pedal.

This first exercise is also the best way to alternate between left and right foot when using the rocking motion on a double pedal.

You can reach a nice speed on a single pedal too, I've been playing straight sixteenth notes @ 125bpm-130bpm.

The second part of the video is the application of the rocking motion technique on a single bass drum pedal.

Here is how I developed the technique. Starting slow, playing quarter notes on the hi-hat and eight notes on the bass drum.
As you develop the precision, speed up until there is a balance of speed, power and precision.
Always use the metronome to really know if the notes values are correct.
When I reach 120bpm, my leg starts to get a bit tense and I shorten the movement.

There is an order to play the rocking motion technique: alternate between Heel Down, Heel Up (Toe Down). The downbeat is always with the heel down. You can always feel the downbeat with the heel down.

The third part of the video shows some ostinato ideas that I've been using in my solos.

My inspiration was Neil Peart's "O Baterista" drum solo. He plays the 3/4 ostinato that Max Roach used to play in The Drum also Walzes.

First ostinato: 3/4 between the bass drum and the hi-hat.
Second ostinato: The same beat but using the foot cowbell.
Third ostinato: 5/4 between the bass drum and the hi-hat.
Fourth ostinato: 5/8 using the same beat of the third ostinato.

The 5/4 and the 5/8 ostinatos are: Right Foot Bass Drum, Left Foot Bass Drum, Right Foot Bass Drum, Left Foot Hi-Hat, Left Foot Hi-Hat.

Gear:

DW 5002AD3 Double Pedal (Low spring tension)
Pearl Eliminator P2000C Single Pedal
Pearl Hi-Hat

Evans EC3/Retroscreen on bass drum, without muffling.
A Zildjian New Beat Hi-Hat
LP Salsa Cowbell
Zildjian Vinnie Colaiuta Drumsticks

I'm using some of Dennis Chambers's Evans drumheads that he used in his brazilian Zildjian Day clinic on my drums. G2 Coated, G1 Clear and EC3 Clear.

  • pedal has nothing to do with speed. your technique and how much you practice will build speed. learning how to do doubles and things take time. you can do all of these techniques to ATLEAST 160-200 bpm with a cheap 100 dollar pedal. dont let people tell you that buying a 400 dollar pedal will make you fast, because it wont. time makes you fast, hours and hours of practice with a metronome. and key is to start slow and make it perfect

  • That actually was a big help with using the foot petal. Thanks for the video.

  • The sound and the video seem a little bit off. Are you saying that you drop your leg and heel on the downbeat or play with your heel down and push upward on the downbeat. Slightly confused. Also how long did it take to coordinate this? It's taking a toll on me. Also...shoes or no shoes....does it affect you?

  • @elrojomuerto6x De nada! Abraço

  • @elrojomuerto6x You're welcome, I'll make a new video later this month about bass drum technique, with better video, audio and technique demonstrations.

  • @elrojomuerto6x muito obrigado pela sua resposta velhio.. Muito obrigado novamente..

  • @1982Rafael Yes i figured as much.. Thank you very much.. This technique will be good for me to learn, someone stole my connecting rod and slave pedal at my last show and i cant afford a new one.. so i have to start being able to play single rolld with one foot.. And i hope this technique will do that for me..

Thank you very much for the video and your timely response to my question..

  • @elrojomuerto6x Correct! I meant heel because if you practice the movement at a slow speed, the heel touches the floor but at faster tempos the movement shortens so you just work with the rebound from the drumhead. Thanks!
