@superemposed Thank god that they did! The coal industry, was losing money at a horrendous rate; the government subsidy had risen to $1.3 billion a year by 1982. Also, the coal energy was always the first alternative so that even there were a cheaper alternative on the market you were not allowed to buy it so that made prices more expensive which meant that the British people lost even more money. Especially the poor who consume large amount of energy in comparison to how much money they have.

@agaichapter25 By 1982 the government subsidy of the coal industry had risen to $1.3 billion a year. So that was money that the British tax payers lost each year to keep the inefficient coal industry going. Also your country was required to buy the coal industrys energy even if it wasn't the cheapest on the market so that added even more billions of dollars that the British people lost.
On the whole she saved billions of pounds for the British people over the years to follow.

Totally reckless actions by Thatcher have put this countries independence and wealth at risk all through her spite to beat the unions.Consequently her actions will prove to be costly in the future when once again we return to the use of coal over and above nuclear power. How she was allowed to do what she did to communities and the mining industry god only knows but it will prove to have been a fools errand.Economics will dictate that we regain our independence for fuel/power resources.

@petertownend ............in yrs to come people will look back at thatchers actions against the coal miners has an act of political economic madness bordering on treachery.Without doubt the fuel of the future will once again be coal and mines will be re opened and new shafts sunk to mine the precious fossil fuel to sustain our nation. These words will prove to be true has we will have no choice to once again reclaim our independence to avoid being in the hands of others.

To think that a conservative goverment put an end to all this.
So true, indeed. And, if and when we do open up these reserves (again) it will be at great cost to the government and the UK taxpayers!
