Matt Sturm of the US Army Corps of Engineers shows off the permafrost 15 meters below the surface from inside the research tunnel just outside Fairbanks, Alaska. One-hundred ten meters long, and 2.5 meters high, the Permafrost Research Tunnel was built between 1963 and 1965. The tunnel is now chilled to keep the permafrost intact.
