This video was the result of a request for more VFR flight following examples from some of you. Flight following was something I didn't do a lot as a student pilot, so I understand the interest in seeing and hearing how it goes. In fact, this is a very simple direct flight with only a couple of hand-offs but it will give you the idea of the process. And one reminder, that I still consider myself a student at all of this, so this is not presented as a perfect example of ATC communications. There are several places where I could and should have been more concise with my calls. Something to work on going forward. I worked hard to get all of the relevant ATC exchanges from this half-hour cross-country into just a 10-minute video. It starts on the ground at Norwood where, once requested, the Tower (ground frequency) will get you a squawk code during your taxi to run-up. You'll hear me make the request for VFR flight following to Martha's Vineyard along with an appropriate altitude. Next, while taxiing you'll hear them give me the squawk code and Boston frequency, which I will need just after take-off. I didn't have video rolling at this point, so I added a map of the route for reference. Then the flight begins, first with a report from the Tower that my radio was weak. This turned out to not be an issue at any other point in the flight, but I switched radios just to be sure. (Learned later that the planes antenna position relative to the fuselage and Tower antenna can cause a weak signal.) During the remainder of the flight, you'll see what I was seeing whenever I had an exchange with ATC. I've used clock wipes to designate any point where I have removed something for time. I also used my recorder timings to give you a sense of the clock time at the start of each new sequence. This way you can tell how much time I removed from that section. You can assume that during the missing piece, I was either talking to myself or listening to other communications on the frequency. The audio from all external sources is a little weak and there is some static interference. Still trying to work out why that happens, but it might have something to do with which audio jack I plug into, but things are clear enough for you to hear what's happening. I should tell you that this was a bit of a gusty day, and you can see evidence of that as I get lined-up on final. Its also worth noting that I did get the entire ATIS for MVY, but I only included one partial example as I worked to get all of the relevant information while also listening to Cape Approach. Once again there are three HD cameras on this video along with all ATC communications. Enjoy this short flight from Norwood OWD to Martha's Vineyard MVY.
