I discuss tone quality on trombone. Also I discuss an exercise or warmup that Hal Diner gave me. This was an exercise he saw Harry Glantz doing. Glantz was principal trumpet with the New York Phil.

This is good for improving success in hitting notes right away first time.

I end with some advice about putting variety into your practice

  • What mouthpiece do you use? I've been playing for 2 years now, which do you suggest?

  • @kingofcourtz Not a thing that can be told via an email. Most of mouthpiece selection has to do with comfort and with what equipment you are playing. You are looking for a good match with the equipment and something that is comfortable, and allows you to play in the style you are seeking. Once you find this sort of mouthpiece, you can usually find the same size and profile made by several different makers, with different platings, or materials. (e.g.-I use a "Bach 12C" size, in stainless)

I play classical, and I have a Bach 6 1/2 a, but it just doesn't feel right. the tone is okay, but it's not what i'm looking for. I guess the degree of level is about right. ANything to suggest?

    Thanks very much

  • @kingofcourtz What model and size of horn? The 6 1/2 AL is the size I use on my Bach 42B, a .547 sized horn.

  • This really helped me......your my idol : ) any other tips on vibrato or phrasing?

  • See my video on vibrato, and I will be doing more on both vibrato and phrasing, as well as on musicality in general.

Phrasing and much of musicality has to do with providing the listener with an experience similar to what they get when listening to a good speaker read poetry. Also it is similar to hearing a very gifted speaker deliver a speech.

I will discuss this in a subsequent video. Meanwhile it is good to listen to the Count Basie Orchestra to hear what jazz phrasing can sound like.

  • good idea lol.

  • Hey. You have a great tone quality. I have a stuffy embouchure. Can you give me some tips to fix it?

    Thanks

  • I really appreciate your lessons. At my age, with lots of obligations that (sadly) take me away from the trombone, you've given me another efficient exercise to work into by daily practice. Many thanks,

    Joel
