Motion to Senate:

Withdrawal of Biology Modules

Recommended: That effective September 1, 2010, admission to the following modules be discontinued in the Faculty of Science:

Honors Specialization in Animal Physiology
Honors Specialization in Cell and Developmental Biology
Honors Specialization in Comparative Physiology
Honors Specialization in Ecology and Evolution
Honors Specialization in Conservation Biology
Major in Conservation Biology

That students enrolled in the modules prior to September 1, 2010 be permitted to continue with the understanding that they must complete the requirements prior to
September 2015.

That effective October 2015, the modules be withdrawn and all registration discontinued.

Background:

The Department of Biology is in the process of revamping all of its modules to facilitate a better learning
experience for Biology students. The proposed modules for deletion contain only the following percentages
of the Departments students with the remaining being distributed among the Departments other modules:

Honors Specialization in Animal Physiology: 1.82%
Honors Specialization in Cell and Developmental Biology: 3.1%
Honors Specialization in Comparative Physiology: 0.6%
Honors Specialization in Ecology and Evolution: 0.87%
Honors Specialization in Conservation Biology: 0.68%
Major in Conservation Biology: 1.21%

The Departments other modules provide a comprehensive curriculum in Biology or Genetics, as well as maintaining three multi disciplinary modules. The intent is to focus effort on offering students quality undergraduate education in modules that are of a clear interest to students within the Department. Reducing module offerings will also focus future course development in areas with strong student interest.
