Greater freedom for Afghan women was one of the promises of the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan. U.S. and Afghan officials say there have been improvements, noting that some two million women and girls are now attending school, whereas no females were allowed an education under the ultra-strict religious rule of the Taliban. Despite Western efforts, many Afghan women say their lives have not improved significantly and a the number of women committing suicide by setting fire to themselves is on the rise. I knew it was bad, but didn't realize until watching this group of vids just how opressive it is there for women. I hope they find the courage to stop burning themselves, and instead turn the fire onto their oppressors by uniting.
