The US military presence in Iraq has been over. The last column of the US troops has left the Iraqi territory crossing the border of Kuwait. On Friday, the Iraqi authorities took over the last US military base in Iraq. The US will keep in Iraq only 16,000 advisers and guards as well as 160 servicemen to train the Iraqi soldiers.
The US military presence in Iraq lasted for almost 9 years. The war in Iraq which resulted in the overthrowing of the regime of Saadam Hussein took lives of about 4,500 Americans. The number of Iraqi people killed in that war according to different estimates varies from 100,000 to 120,000.
Prime Minister Nouri a-Maliki's Shi'ite-led government struggles with a power-sharing arrangement among Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish parties.
U.S. President Barack Obama says the future of Iraq is "in the hands of its own people."
