hdd speaker

Headcrashed IBM 40GB ICL series HDD (platters removed) playing "Awol One - Rhythm".
The arm coil is disconnected from the logic board and hooked up to a Technics SU-7300 Amplifier.
There is no other speaker running in that video. All you hear comes out of the HDD!

Eine defekte IBM ICL 40GB Platte spielt "Awol One - Rhythm".
Die Armablenkung in Festplatten funktioniert wie ein Lautsprecher, eine bewegliche Spule zwischen Permanentmagneten. Die Spule wurde an einen Audioverstärker angeschlossen und durch die entstehenden Armbewegungen und Resonanzen im Gehäuse spielt das Ding jetz Musik. Im Video läuft allein die Platte, keine weiteren Lautsprecher!

perfect job for a deathstar... making music... sure seems like a more fitting job than actually storing data. lol

did that deathstar have any telltale signs of a head crash like see thru platters?

no, i just used the word headcrashed for a failed hdd. it went clicking after spinup. i think this was the first hdd with glass platters i disassembled. i was pretty surprised when they broke.

what did you do hook the arm up to the leads to your stereo?

hey, i had to look which 2 wires on the foil cable supply the arm coil and connect the speaker leads from the stereo to these. polarity does not matter.

it works also with rotating motors e.g. CPU or casing fans

Ha! Diesen Verstärker hab ich auch. Superding, 25 €uros vom Flohmarkt ;) Und das mit der HD ist ja auch zu Geil... Bravo
