Personally, I think that pink jumpsuit he wore for the 'Oils On The Water' concert was "absurdly extravagant and culturally insulting" :D

@webofdesign - I think Rob had a fair point. This is not a good video.

@webofdesign Perhaps, Rob could lighten up a bit. But you must bear in mind MO's strong political beliefs and social convictions. They were never a rock band obsessed with establishing an MTV image and glitzy packaging, they were messengers raising social awareness thru their lyrics and music. Spending $250K to RESHOOT a music video would seem ridiculous to anybody who's got a modicum of artistic integrity.

Well - there's no such thing as a bad Oils album (just some's better than others - like chile :) - but if you want my opinion - and I know you do - my vote goes to "Diesel and Dust" as their best. And yes I have seen them live and will never forget what was one of the best two concerts ever attended. Cheers! Bazza

You'd never know the Oils had American fans too from reading these comments...
A bit rough on us Yanks there, guys. Not our fault they filmed this one is NYC for whatever reason.

Good song by on the great political bands of the last 30 years. Too bad though that so many of these 1990's videos for great songs had to get ruined by directors filling them up with obnoxious hipster doofusses dancing around. Kind of suck because it distracts greatly from the purpose of the songs.

well that's the point of a song like this I didn't know what they were singing about
and so I looked it up
I thought this video was great for this song, just show the band playing
to me it's more natural than trying to dress them up and make them act, most bands can't that's why they play music instead, right?
thanks for posting this video, I thought it was their best song too

typical US styled vid from the time- they know their market i guess and so this wouldv'e played better to MTV or orther garbage shows the label wanted to push the clip to.
this video is absurd, the renta crowd! ha ha - Prob to US eyes seems fairly normal to all other clips that they wouldve' seen around the time but to anny Aus viewer we end up having a chuckle. such a forced clip, suckers,, i still refer to all US as "Seppos"

seems a bit odd singing about road trains, the roma bar, namatjira, monarchy, union jacks remaining and truganninni, underneath brooklyn bridge!
guess they had to give the yanks something to make them feel at home. They would have utterly no idea what the f*&k hes singing about!
but what a brilliant piece of music!
Earth and Sun and Moon is a masterpiece, better than some of their more popular albums in my opinion.

It is a masterpiece. Just out of interest, what would you say are their more popular albums (ignoring Diesel And Dust of course) ?

I came to YouTube to look for the US version of this video after reading about it in the 'Beds Are Burning' biography of the band. The background of this video is that the head of their US record company didn't like the Aussie version, so they paid $250,000 (!) to film another one in NY under the Brooklyn Bridge. Rob Hirst said about the video - "I found it absurdly extravagant and culturally insulting...I felt like we were dancing on Truganini's grave" I think Rob needs to lighten up :)

I'll forgive Rob, he's a hero of mine in terms of drumming.
Having said that, seems a little strange how when they wouldn't even go on Countdown in the late 70's and early 80's that they'd bow to their US record company and look like they were enjoying it.
