How to Make Compost Tea by award winning garden author Doug Green http://www.simplegiftsfarm.com/compost.html there are great many myths running around the net about compost and making compost tea and part of what I would like to do is to show you the action and the method of getting compost tea started.

The unfortunate reality is that compost tea is not the be-all and end-all or magic bullet for correcting all garden mistakes. It may be an excellent way to increase soil microorganisms and jumpstart your gardens soil health. I've used compost tea for many years now based on their recommendations of old garden books and now, modern research.

To be honest, I don't know whether it's making my garden better but it makes me feel better to think that I am doing something positive out there. In other words, I have no scientific, double blind testing, or other evaluation mechanisms. I'm going on what I think is happening and what works for me.

The theory is that by making compost tea you will produce billions of microorganisms, far more than can be produced in easily available amounts of compost. In other words eighth few gallons of compost tea will provide adequate amounts of microorganisms for large acreages where it would take huge amounts of actual compost to provide the same number of microorganisms.

Our compost tea in this video is being made with a KIS brewer system, 4.5 gallons of water, a bit of citric acid (vitamin C) , molasses, sugar and a half a pot of worm compost. I'll let it brew for 12 hours or so and then use it all right away. It does not store (microorganisms require food and water and oxygen) so use it all. You can't apply too much! So toss it around with a watering can to help your soil improve. I hope you'll see great compost tea results!

  • what size pump do you use?

  • @kocfkocf darned if I know the cfm. You could go to the KIS home page and check out the sizing there. As I say in the text, I do use the KIS system but don't keep the details of cfm etc in my head. :-)

  • nice, were those Echinacea flowers?

  • @royalblowno indeed they were - 'Doppelganger'

  • This is an excellent guideline to grow the best garden. I an already imagine what this will do to the plants. Thank you so much for sharing such a smart idea. I will certainly go to your website and get more ideas. God Bless You.

  • @Tentmakerindia Thanks very much for the kind words. Always nice to start the day this way. :-)

  • salamat kay naa koy idea unsaon pghimo og compost tea.

  • Great video, thank you. Can you tell me what the actual air flow is (cfm or preferably in Liters/min) on your pump/aerator so I can get one that is enough but not too much? The KIS system looks great but too expensive for me. I'm looking forward to the recipes being posted on your website.

  • @000Winter000 Ah no - you really need to use compost to make compost tea. It's full of living organisms - using blood and bone meal wouldn't produce anything.
