I think it would have been scarier if the story had included the lyrics to "Oh Susanna." When it's sung in such a context it can be a rather creepy song.

That's kind of a lame ending.
Would have been better for her to hear the humming all night long, but finally get to sleep. Then, when she would wake up, she'd find the severed head.

Of all the scary stories to tell in the dark illustrations, this one creeped me out the most when I was kid. I can't believe they are reissuing the books with different illustrations, it makes me sad, the original drawings prompted such creepy thoughts as a I child, I can credit these illustrations for making me want to be an artist!
