http://www.karenrothnutrition.com Holistic Nutrition Consultant, Karen Roth, MS, NC talks about the health benefits of pistachios.

Pistachios have been called the Skinny Nut," because they are one of the lowest calorie, AND lowest fat nuts; Full of fiber and protein, pistachios help you feel fuller longer.

A serving size is ½ cup with shells on, or ¼ cup if shelled. One serving of pistachios has 3 grams of fiber. That's more than most other snack nuts and more than many types of whole fruit.

Pistachios have more potassium than any other nut. Did you know a serving of pistachios has more potassium than half of a large banana?

Per serving, pistachios have more antioxidants than green tea.

Pistachios are a "hearty" snack offering more cholesterol fighting phytosterols than any other nut.

The green color in pistachios comes from a compound called lutein which helps to prevent the most common form of blindness in older adults.

Pistachios offer more than 30 different vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.

Pistachio nuts have also been shown to improve cardiovascular health. According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, pistachios may lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels.

Pistachios go really good in salads and you can toss them in your yogurt or oatmeal.

  • how does it have the least amount of calories and fat? i'm very sure that an ounce of pistachio has the same amount of fat as cashews and peanuts (13 grams) and that a pistachio has more calories at 170.

  • @AEC32094 Pistachios have only three calories per nut – about half the calories of most snack nuts. Thirty pistachio kernels yield just 100 calories, compared to 14 for almonds and 11 for cashews. You also get more nuts per serving with pistachios – 49 per ounce, versus 23 almonds and 10-12 macadamia nuts.

  • yum...makes me want to make something out of pistachios.

  • If you come up with something creative, please post back here!

  • Good to know. Pistachios take a bit longer to eat, too, with the shelling. I was shocked how many calories in sunflower nuts/seeds. I am doing low carb/fat/sodium/sugar and it is hard to have one without the other. Can you possibly do a video on nuts in general? It would be interesting to see how they all compare, from your take.

  • I've always loved pistachios since i was a kid, good to know theyre so good for me too lol

  • @AEC32094 I still don't get it. All nuts have around the same fat content per serving. To say the pistachio has half the calories of other nuts based on the paistachio is half the size of other nuts. So, 30 pistachio = 28 almonds = 22 cashews = 100 calories. I can eat pistachios in a gulp, almonds on the other hand would take a lot longer and be more filling. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE 'stachios, but this info is misleading.

  • And as a hedonist that doesn't give a damn about health, pestachios taste great!

  • This is a really helpful video, please keep making more :-) I like to get my pistachios from this place called love street living foods.
