Painting a realistic still life in oil, by dutch artist Jos van Riswick.

Trying some new atmospheric effects to make an object look less flat: paint through the background an the edges, then sharpen the edge where necessary. This technique works very well on the cardboard ground I used. The cardboard has some structure (less than canvas). but enough to allow very easy smoothing of the paint. To facilitate this I also paint into a couch of equal parts lindeed oil and Graham Walnut Alkyd medium

  • What are you painting on, and where can you get it?

  • @Cruelhazard it's cardboard. Doesnt' have a brand name on it unfortunately, just the text 'grey cardboard'.. It has some structure to it. Together with the ground I use (acrylic varnish from brand 'Rambo') it's touch is pure magick. It feels like canvas, ie easy smoothing of the touches, even with hog hair brushes (see eg around 0:22, the blue area) but without the weave of the canvas...
