On a beautiful and cloudless day in Spring, QR Heritage steam locomotive C17 974 headed the Australian Railway Historical Society's annual steam train excursion to Laidley as part of the town's Spring Festival celebrations.
Unusually, the train commenced at the Ipswich Railway Workshops, the birthplace of Queensland Rail. This was due to a major track closure between Ipswich and Brisbane's western suburbs.
At the beginning we see English Electric Locomotive 1620 coupled up to the train along with the steam locomotive. The diesel was left in the South Yard at Ipswich as a backup incase of a failure with the steam locomotive as there were no other trains running that weekend as a consequence of the track closure.
