The Staffordshire Hoard is officially the biggest Anglo-Saxon gold find ever, but what does the hoard itself mean for our perception of the period?. Follow us on twitter at http://twitter.com/itn_news.

  • very exciting, and an amazing find for humankind, to be able to understand better a period of history so maligned

  • Debateable. Even the poorest Briton today lives better and longer than a Saxon king. If modern Brtain is a "hellhole" it is not because it is "godless", being godless is probably the reason for most of its better attributes.

  • stolen in battle?yeah found in staffs stolen by birmingham and taken from staffordshire...and now they want to close our museum where it rightfully belongs.nice.................

  • not like the Hoxane Hoard that was discovered in 1992

  • Working the soil with modern techniques - applying artificial fertilizer rather than leaving your fields fallow to replace the soil naturally - tends to reduce the amount of soil. So the artifacts have been getting close to the surface year by year as the soil is depleted until finally the topmost ones were in range of the plow.

  • wonderfull finds from a time much better than this godless hellhole of modern britian.

  • I need a metal detector - now.
