Mormon in more than claim to the title.

There are so much more difference between christianity and the LDS church (doctrinally), than the FLDS and LDS...
Mormons want to call themselves christians.... when they are far from christianity in doctrine..... FLDS are not far from the LDS church doctrine.... so they must be called mormons if mormons want to be called christians....
chew on that one :-)
Mormonism is not part of christianity, will never be... maybe some "christians" will see them as christians in the endtimes

I guess then, that groups of mormon churches clinging to what was original to the first prophet, the diaries of his followers, documents from his time and even plain view teachings of the modern LDS church is nullified, simply because the "church" has changed so radically from the teachings of Joseph Smith and modern LDS culture up until the beginning of the 20th century when the church sought to be politically correct.

What does Mormon mean? How is it defined and who decides. Pes. Hinkley said it means "more good" many church leaders have labeled it as slang and derogatory. In the past the church used it in their Mormon adds. Many non-members see Mormon as meaning more than one wife. Just because the Church goes in a different direction that doesn't mean a group looses their claim to that identity. Mormon meant polygamist long before it meant what you imagine it to today

OK so we are talking two different things here. One is what is Mormon Culture? The culture of the LDS Church is currently one man one woman. There is a history of plural marriage and some eluding to that practice being reinstituted at some time in the future but it is not now a part of LDS culture. But is LDS culture Mormon Culture? That is the other question that needs to be answer.
Mormonism refers to a culture that has never been defined and has so many opposing wings because it keeps changing over time. Who is to say who has the rights to the term the only thing you can say is that they are not LDS.

That is a little contradictory to say it refers to a culture that's never been defined. I mean if it's never been defined then I have a hard time seeing it legitimately being called a culture. If something is a culture that implies distinguishing features. The question then becomes what those are. These can, and generally I would say do, stand independent of internal variances that happen through time so long as you consider something to be an actual culture.

then i put it to you that Mormon Culture has at it's core plural marriage up until the manifesto when Mormon culture split. Those who practice plural marriage still have the right to lay claim to the term Mormon. Even the LDS Church still holds to plural marriage just look at sealings of husbands to more than one wife either due to death or divorce. Women are not sealed to more than one man.

I just have a hard time taking that plural marriage is some core to 'Mormon Culture' and thus break offs having it entitles them to maintain claim to the term "Mormon." What about revelation through the one given the authority over sealing power? I mean that's the core of section 132, not plural marriage, but revelation and the sealing power via the one chosen by God. These break away groups deny soooo much of LDS doctrine, and do so much violence to it, to claim that they have the one prophet.

As the Church has moved away from the term "Mormon" in the past they can hold no claim on it today. They have no right to stop anyone else who identifies themselves as Mormon but do not exactly align themselves with the standards of the LDS Church.
You can not have your cake and eat it too.

They have only moved away from it in terms of wanting to emphasize our original name and title, not because the word or label was disliked. Just because I prefer people call me by my name doesn't mean I'm inherently trying to show a dislike for nick names or other labels that are used by close relatives or by co-workers or friends. Often the setting and situation/context impact what is sought. Formal titles are an excellent example of this.
