The Hot Five Jazzmakers pay tribute here to Mick Collins, who was their cornet player for several years during the 1990's.
Everyone was saddened to hear that Mick died on Saturday April 18th 2009, after a long and plucky fight with his illness.
He was a fine melodic player with excellent rhythm, tone and ideas. He was also a good team man and friend who often inspired the other band members to greater heights. A versatile player equally at home with "hot" or "smooth", he had the sweetness of tone and technique to evoke Bix Beiderbecke at times, as he does here, with "Davenport Blues" Spiegel Willcox, guesting with the band on trombone, aged 95, played with Bix many times. We can see he appreciates the good sounds he is hearing around him by his expressions!
The other members of the Hot Five Jazzmakers in this 1998 concert recording were: Janet Shaw -baritone sax; Colin Bray - string bass; Rainer Hunck - banjo; Gary Scriven - drums; Brian Towers shares the trombone role with Spiegle Willcox and Mick Collins plays cornet.
Our thanks to the Canadian Collector's Congress for making this recording available to us. Perhaps Mick will meet up with Spiegle again, "up there" It would be re-assuring to think so!
