Gay Marriage - A Change is Gonna Come - Adam Lambert, MLK, Obama

Congratulations, New York! I created and posted this video on January 11, 2010, after learning that Ted Olson and David Boies had filed a lawsuit on behalf of couples who were denied marriage licenses as a result of Proposition 8 to declare the state's prohibition of gay marriage unconstitutional under the U.S. Constitution.

Today, on August 4, 2010, federal district Judge Vaughn Walker (appointed by Republican President George H. W. Bush) has ruled dramatically against California's gay-marriage ban. This is not a case of liberals versus conservatives - one of the most famous conservative attorneys in the US is working on the side of the plaintiffs. I liked that Judge Walker published his ruling just 8 days before my 24th anniversary with my partner Stephen. It appears that Judge Walker's ruling is a significant step towards societal recognition of our relationship, which has lasted far longer than the average opposite-sex marriage.

While several states in the U.S. currently allow gay marriage or recognize civil unions, the federal government doesn't acknowledge them. According to the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO), there are 1,138 statutory provisions in which marital status is a factor in determining benefits, rights, and privileges. These rights and responsibilities apply only to male-female married couples. The 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) defines marriage as between a man and a woman and thus bars same-sex couples from receiving any federal recognition of same sex marriage or conveyance of marriage benefits to same sex couples through federal marriage law.

I'm so angry that gay marriage was abolished in California because the Mormons cheated and used dirty money to make it go to vote again and then rig the election! Grrr. I hate religious groups that push people around.

To see Obama speaking with Martin Luther King's march in the background, and Adam Lambert singing Sam Cooke's song, with the now new law of legalized same sex marriage in New York creates a VERY POWERFUL, PASSIONATE AND IMPORTANT STATEMENT!
