This audio track is slightly altered. For the exact speed, click: http://vimeo.com/14345135
.
Matt Mattox was dubbed in this number by Bill Lee, who has a very different vocal quality. Here's Matt's original recording, which fit in with no editing or speed altering required. Thanks to Karine for pointing out that this track existed on the CD.

This would've been the easiest clip I've made if it hadn't been for those damn axe hits, each one of which had to be individually cut in.

I used the non-Cinemascope take for better web viewing.

  • the synchronization with the ax sound is absolutely amazing.

  • @msjoejonas18

Thanks - it was a lot of work!

  • This speed is way better than the one in the movie; more melancholy, like the song.

  • @judygable

I had to slow the speed to post it on youtube. Click on the vimeo link to hear the actual speed.

  • By the way, he could have used his own voice because it is very beautiful as it is. -Just one doubt, was Jane Powell, (the singer who didn't know how to sing), related to Eleanor Powell, (the dancer who didn't know how to dance)?) I'm only curious)

  • No relation.

  • The thing that makes this song incredible is that the ENTIRE clip is one continuous shot. There is no cutting and pasting and editing. It all had to be perfect down to the last ax swing. Pretty amazing when you think about it

I listened to the dubbed version right after listening to this and find Matt's voice has a mellowness that fits the character very well. I think you should be given the key to the MGM vault and be allowed to go wild. Imagine what you would find.

I still do NOT know why Matt's performance of this song wasn't used in the film. His singing is simply great.

  • the most beautiful musical........

  • The oldest brother Adam (Howard Keel) is missing; he is with his wife at home; I remember enjoying this movie fully around 1956-57, when it came to local cinema; I saw it at least three times right away; shows how interested I was about music already as a kid, at eleven, twelve year old; I was also into Sinatra, Mathis, a sucker for good romantic melodies; at 12 I was able whistle over 100 different pop songs without any difficulty, including many from Seven brides for Seven Brothers; pure fun

  • I wish Gideon had been able to sing more on the movie, too. Is Benjamin the voice you didn't care for? His is the one I didn't care for. Maybe he knew how to sing, but I didn't care for his voice. One of the brothers didn't seem to sing much, or at all.

  • @christopher242424 Oh, I do not like her voice at all. I didn't say I liked her voice. But I can see how my comment would make it sound that way. She has good control and volume, even though I don't care for her style at all. I think one of the worst voices ever is Walt Disney's Snow White. Her voice is one that I never like to hear, yet I do like to imitate it once in a blue moon. Millie's solos are usually or always fast forwarded through when I watch Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

  • @Delphinus32 We'll have to agree on disagree. I think Jane Powell had one of the most terrible voices ever heard. On this movie, for instance, six of the seven brothers had wonderful voices. Five of the brides also had lovely voices. But each time that Jane started a song, the only wish was to give up from the movie.

Try to listen Love is like this (Carinhoso) uploaded in youtube because, as one of the uploaders said, he couldn't believe in something so bizarre (bizarre in the bad sense)

  • @christopher242424 How could Jane Powell not know how to sing? It sounds like she's been singing forever.

  • Caleb is my favorite brother so I enjoyed watching this. Thank you for posting!
