Judy Collins sings the Rodgers & Hart ballad, written back in 1941, at a 1982 New York supper club event. Judy says she first learned the song from her father when she was in grade school. She recorded it for her 1979 album, "Hard Times For Lovers."

  • Thanks, Betahifi, to have posted that performance by Judy Collins.Would you by any chance have her recording of this song in her "Hard Times for Lovers"?

It's all a matter of personal taste, but her rendering of this song and that of Frank Sinatra in the 50's are the ones I prefer.

  • @stexup55 I do have that recording, but I'm concentrating on posting performance videos here. You can buy the song from iTunes and Amazon.

Thanks for the affirmation. It's not always a popular viewpoint.

  • @meltzerboy

    Yes, very lovely...

Thank you, betahihi for posting... thank you, Nate, for sharing!

  • @thechinadesk I strongly agree with both your comments.

  • judy collins ---high strung--- conflicted--and not true to her mentors---

  • One of the things I admire about Collins is that she never takes the easy way out. She sings songs almost dead straight. Songs sung dead straight require perfect timing. Any imperfections are immediately apparent. Songs sung straight are much harder to sing than songs sung with "stylings."

Songs sung with self-indulgent "stylings" provide slop, allowing the singer to hide errors, but at a very high price -- the sacrifice of the purity of the melodic line.

  • Collins is amazing in her versatility. Everything from folk classics to show tunes, all performed in her trademarked effortless, crystalline vocal style.
