Squirrels are clever little mammals that love to play and are smart enough to store their food. According to fossil records, squirrels have been on earth for over 11 million years and the Squirrels that we recognize have been around for about 3 million years. There are over 365 species of squirrels in seven families and they are found in every country in the world except for Australia, Madagascar and the polar regions. They are one of the most successful animals to adjust to human environments. A squirrels teeth grow continuously. Their incisor's will grow six inches per year, but stay short due to the constant wear they receive. The orange colored stains you see on a squirrels front teeth are not from the foods it eats. The "stain" is a protective coating that occurs naturally to strengthen the teeth.
Squirrels are extremely vocal. They bark, chatter, scream, and purr. Flashing movements of their tails, stamping their feet and the way they walk are also modes of a squirrels communication. Squirrels are primarily vegetarians and their natural diet consists of nuts, fruits, berries, mushrooms and the occasional insect.

  • I had a pair of red squirrels that lived in a tree in my yard and both of them would come to me and even follow me around the yard if I didn't put seeds in their saucer for them ever morning. The male was so tame that he would let me pet him and take food out of my hand. I miss that tree rat.
