A live performance shot by Laura Pachkowska at The Seven Stars pub in Bristol, England in June 2008. The song is a topical reworking of the cult classic by Diamanda Galas. This version is supposedly narrated by Blake Fielder-Civil, detailing his troubled marriage to Amy Winehouse. Live sound by Alfie Kingston.

  • Didn't Diamanda Galas write the original Baby's Insane? I'm much more interested in a real artist like Diamanda Galas than a self indulgent result of shlock culture like Amy Winehouse. Diamanda does pieces on the Armenian genocide. Amy does videos of herself doing coke. Yawn.

  • Yes, it's a Diamanda Galas song, arguably her poppiest and most humorous moment. When Amy Winehouse emerged I was struck by how in some ways she resembled Diamanda. 'Baby's Insane' is like a follow-up to Amy's 'Rehab' (although it predates 'Rehab' by a decade, of course). I rewrote Diamanda's lyric here to make a point about Amy's drug abuse and the horrors celebrity culture - perhaps it was a little mean-spirited of me. But I think it also underlines what a great song the original was.
