Theodore Kaczynski has long been mentioned as a Zodiac suspect. Kacsynski lived in the SF Bay area during the time of the Zodiac murders. Both Zodiac and Kaczynski were ruthless killers, highly intelligent, interested in and expert at bombs and codes, made references to opera and literature, demanded their words be published on the front pages of newspapers on penalty of death for innocents if not done, both threatened to bomb mass transit, both left drawings of crossed lines inside circles at crime scenes, both sent taunting messages to police and victims, both usually used excessive postage, often double postage. Both had an interest in opera, Norse myths, codes, bombs, and both were filled with hatred and a desire for revenge against society. Zodiac said to surviving victim Bryan Hartnell on 9/27/69 that he was from "Deer Lodge, Montana", an obscure but beautiful small town Ted had just driven through with his brother weeks earlier, and within an hour of where Ted would buy the cabin he would live in the rest of his life. Kaczynski also looks very much like the composite sketches of the Zodiac.


The Original Night Stalker is described as 5' 9" - 5' 11", 150 to 160 pounds, sandy blonde to light brown hair, blue eyes, thought to have a naturally high pitched voice he tried to disguise, after attacks gave taunting messages to victims, wore military surplus clothes and boots, rode a bicycle, owned an early 1950's pick up truck and a white Pontiac - all of which is also true of Ted Kaczynski.

Kaczynski matches the description of EAR/ONS. Kaczynski was 34 in 1976, but looked much younger. In 1987, when he was 45, witnesses who saw him plant a bomb described him as 25 to 30, which is 15 to 20 years younger than he was. Kaczynski was 5' 9" tall, 150 to 160 pounds, strawberry dirty blonde to medium brown hair, thin but wiry athletic build, had a white 1970's model Pontiac, an early 1950's Chevy pick up truck, later was known to ride BIKES everywhere, often did crimes with a nature theme, such as victims, streets, cities or other tie ins to water, animals, trees, wood, etc. Kaczynski put tree parts and twigs in many of his bombs; EAR/ONS left wood matches at some scenes, and beat one couple to death with a wood log.

There are many other points of interest, and some differences as well.

Betsy Aardsma Case: Has many similarities to the probable Zodiac murder of Cheri Jo Bates at the Riverside College Library. Both were on fall holiday periods at the end of the month, both were brutal attacks, both were done by a knife of the almost exact same dimensions, both were in or at a campus library, both are unsolved with no good leads, the Aardsma murder happened on the exact three year anniversary of the Bates confession letter and we have the strange poem at the Bates college about killing a girl in a red dress with Aardsma then being killed in a red dress.

There is interesting evidence to suggest Zodiac became EAR/ONS, and compelling evidence Zodiac was Kaczynski. But this is just one theory in the case. Go to ear-ons dot com for the full picture.

@bon1931 Composite sketches are not perfect but they are what we have. TK does have a startling similarity to the Zodiac and EAR/OSN sketches. And TK looks like the bearded man who was a Tylenol Murders suspect, the man seen on the security camera footage apparently watching Paula Prince buy the tainted Tylenol that would kill her. I don't know if Ted was the Zodiac or Tylenol Killer, I have tried to gather evidence to rule him in or out it is up to police and FBI now.

@bon1931 He was bound to a bed for a week in a hospital which his mother said caused a huge change in him. he said he suffered from "acute sexual starvation" and had fantasies of ebing a woman. A failed sex chane bid in 1966 led to him saying in his diary he was now ready to "really kill" all he hated, including love making couples, a frequent target of Zodiac and EAR/ONS.

@bon1931 You need to read the EAR poem and look at all the evidence. At this point I think the evidence shows TK as a very good suspect for Zodiac and Tylenol. Less so for EAR/ONS but enough there that it should be looked at. Go to unazod and see the message board there.

To say that 'the burden of proof rests on the alternative hypothesis is to say that these need to be demonstrated or strongly suggested by circumstantial evidence in order that the hypothesis has surface plausibility (has any traction at all). Having said all that, it would be a great relief to learn that ONS is safely incarcerated. I hope, in spite of many many misgivings, that you are correct.

I own that there is some resemblance between the composite renderings of suspicious persons thought to be the EAR-ONS and TK but the reliability of these composites is highly suspect. Finally, is there any evidence to support the hypothesis that TK engaged in so-called paraphilic behavior? Is there any evidence to support the claim that TK engaged in BDSM, had a preoccupation with bondage or a history of sexual abuse?

Doesn't the burden of proof rest on the alternative hypothesis that TK=ONS? Maybe the hypothesis is not precluded by time-line but is there any reason to suppose the identity of these individuals beyond the fact that both exhibited a degree of intelligence and tactical sophistication rare among offenders--even serial offenders? ONS had no apparent ideological rationale for his offenses; TK propounded an elaborate rationale that was ultimately his undoing.

@akwilks Furthermore, it is almost certain Kaczynski left California before Zodiac sent his first letter. If he was Zodiac, Ted would also be acting out of character, as he hated braggarts and big shots, two defining characteristics of Zodiac. Anyway, why would Ted keep quiet during his trial? He would have admitted the Tylenol and Zodiac cases in further exchange for his life. Also, TK only possessed explosives and a pistol at the time of his arrest: where was the cyanide, jack?

@akwilks you're basing it on the assumption that TK is the tylenol killer. Kaczynski also feared for his life, whereas Zodiac enjoyed taunting the police. Zodiac also personally killed his victims, whereas Kaczynski bombed people. Ted was also very amateur at first, whereas Zodiac was very effective from the beginning. Kaczynski didn't want the people he hated to live, while Zodiac wanted slaves for the afterlife. Furthermore, Ted said he never had cyanide: why would he deny it?
