Calcium carbide reacts with water to form acetylene gas. This gas is highly flammable and often used in welding and cutting torches.

In this demo, ice is added to calcium carbide. Water from the melting ice then reacts with the calcium carbide to form acetylene, which is ignited. The end result is what APPEARS to be flaming ice. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

  • instead of ice, can you do it with liquid water?

  • It will still make acetylene gas with just water. It would happen more quickly though, so you would just get an explosion every time you lit it. I don't think you would be able to make it keep going like it does with the ice.
