OS/2 WebExplorer

Trivia:OS/2 was the first operating system to ship with a Web browser - a year before Microsoft Internet Explorer was introduced.

Is this a new video of OS/2, or an old video? The reason I ask is that the main screen don't look familiar and I have been using OS/2 since version 3 and don't remember the Warp icon on the screen. Some of the features look different also.

This is an old video. I made it while Warp was still in beta. I made the Warp images myself (they weren't in the shipping product). David

A later version of lotus I used had some kind of weird WebExplore integrated inside it to access IBM's website (which did render everything properly). This was a few years ago. IBM bundled lotus with my intellistation for whatever reason.

@MisterEvasion I noticed that some some simple pages with OS/2 Warp. There are so many changes with the html until while working in OpenSuSE Linux I have trouble with the browser in it to open up one certain web page. The same web page opened up perfectly under Windows. That is why I never got very interested in writing in html since there would be changes and the add-on's which is now with the newer versions.

@semco72057 - I was able to use IBM Web Explorer. I think the problem is that it is structured for the old version of the hypertext transfer protocol. This is proven by going to a perfect test site. If you go to 'cd textfiles com' you will see an entirely different page than with Netscape for example. It's weird...

@MisterEvasion I have to get the computer with OS/2 installed fixed then try it out once more. The last time I trued the IBM Explorer it could not fully display most web pages due to outdated drivers.

@semco72057 - What is wrong with the TCP/IP? If you open up the status window, it will sometimes 'wake up'. I find it very frustrating. The only thing I can think of is that when Warp 4 came out, dialup networking was the norm in the mid-90s, so the connectivity structure was built around that. I know it is the TCP/IP for certain, because the same thing happens both at work and at home. I might try an old token ring adapter I have that is made by IBM.

@MisterEvasion I remember that with Warp 4 you had to start the computer up hitting the keys to get into computer setup and do something before allowing it to fully boot and then the installation would complete. I always had problems with the TCP/IP on it and one reason I have not put it on another computer yet. As for eCS 1.0 which is on one hard drive on a computer which is down now I may get around to fixing the computer and running it again.

@semco72057 - I haven't given up on Warp 4 just yet. I have two old machines I put it on and there's something strange with IBM TCP/IP. I do not get a consistent connection. Drivers are out there for ethernet cards - but the setup is a bit tricky for some. I have EcomStation, but want to get another more powerful PC to put it on.

@os2memories It looked good and I used OS/2 to do much of my work. The problems was with drivers for hardware other than IBM equipment. The OS had programs which is just now becoming available for the Windows OS. I look at GoToMeeting and think of it included with OS/2 3.0.
