Some history of the Boise Idaho Greenbelt path / trail.

This is a copy of a home movie made in 1970 by Bill Onweiler, former Boise City councilman. His purpose was to promote the concept of a Boise River Greenbelt. In that era the river was less a source of recreation and more of a garbage dump.

Sadly, Bill Onweiler passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2010.

  • This is part of how the greenbelt got started. Mr Onweiler took this video around to Kiwanis and Rotary club meetings. He was also smart enough to keep that video all these years and donate a copy to Boise Parks and Rec where I found it.

  • I should do an episode of TV Cycle where I ride along the 2011 Greenbelt and sync it up to the video. Thanks for posting this!

  • absolutely amazing this video should be in the archives

  • Thank you !

  • Thanks so much for posting this very historic video and to those that preserved it through the years. It is most valueable. I only wish more videos were posted on you tube from the early 70's. such wonderful memories of a once great city.

  • Spectacular piece of Boise history. Thank you.

  • Thanx for posting this great material!

Exactly what Mr. Onweiler was warning against has occurred in Garden City. Developers grabbed the land for private use, excluding the general public's open access to the river. East and west of Riverside Village, river access is restricted. In RV, bikes are banned, contrary to the State mandate that the trail there be multi-use -- private Idaho at it's worst!

For detail, idahocog org or search the net for Idaho Citizens for an Open Greenbelt.
