http://www.FunToWatch.TV Do Full Moons Cause Earthquakes ? Leave a comment. I have heard theories about earthquakes happening on or around the full moon and thought I'd check when the ten strongest earthquakes occurred and what the phase of the moon was at that time. The online moon phase calculator I used only went back to 1952 but I used it figuring I wouldn't find any correlation anyway, but I was definitely wrong.

Of the top 10 strongest earthquakes that occurred during that time period 7 happened within 3 days of a full moon and 2 were within 3 days of a new moon. I live on an island and know that the strongest tides occur around the full and new moons, with the full moon having the stronger tides of the two.

In John McPhee's book, "Basin and Range" he talks about rocks rising to the surface from below. Farmers are very familiar with this phenomenon. In fact, a farmer that I know who's in his 80's has said he thinks rocks grow because he's been clearing them from his land for decades and they never stop coming back! But what really happens is that the surface of the earth moves up and down twice a day just like the tides, as much as 3 feet. We just don't see it happening because it's all moving at the same time, as opposed to the tides which we see rising and falling relative to the land, and it's this constant movement that moves the soil and brings rocks to the surface. It's the same physics that makes the larger potato chips rise to the top of the bag and moves the smaller pieces to the bottom. McPhee doesn't go much beyond this but it makes sense that if the earth is actually moving up and down like the tides it must move more during full and new moons, just like the tides, and that the increased movement would tend to trigger more earthquakes.

This all makes so much sense to me that it makes me wonder why it isn't common knowledge. In fact, it almost seems like anyone who has this view is seen as a semi-quack. I'm not a geologist by any stretch of the imagination so I'm wondering if there are any serious studies out there that show an earthquake/moon correlation?

  • Hey dumb shit who made this video....

A full moon doesn't mean it has more gravitational pull, it just means that light it hitting all of its visible surface....

  • the answer is NO!

  • It occurred to me that I had assumed that the moon pulled on the side of the Earth nearest it and the Sun the other side. This is wrong. They pull almost exactly the same on all parts of the Earth equally (the difference is insignificant). So they don't stretch the crust, the Earth is always in a state of free fall counteracted by its orbital velocity which keeps it from falling into the Sun.

So why the apparent relationship from observations? Probably a coincidence. Yesterdays was at half moon

  • Since I started taking notice of the moon phase when earthquakes happen there seems to be a relationship. I reasoned that at full moon the moon and Sun are on opposite sides of the Earth so pull in different directions stretching the crust and relaxing it at new moon when they're on the same side of the Earth. It seemed to make sense and the evidence fit.. Then a physicist said that there was nothing in physics to suggest a relationship so I re-thought it. I also have a degree in physics. (cont)

  • Something is going on........Maybee theres something about the moon.. We dont know much about that....and wee never were on the moon.

  • THE MAJOR EARTH QUAKE WAS CASUED BY THIS PRODGECT THAT THE AMERICANS MADE. ITS CALLED HAARP

  • i think he means when the moon is closer to the earth it can cause eathquakes

Superstition aside, THE MOON influences/affects the earth in so many ways, including tides. A TIDAL WAVE? THE SUN has been increasingly acting up lately. X-Class Solar-Flare CME? • He's just wondering about it. No need to be harsh. It's healthy for everybody to stop and think about the things that's happening.

  • some people say americans are stupid, some people are right!!!

  • Well, I'm argentinean but I'm living in Chile right now, for the earthquake 27/02/10 the moon were full, big and red.

  • it's not TRUE! for your information
