Crochet Solid Hexagon

Written by Teresa Richardson

Video Tutorial: Crochet Solid Hexagon
Video Tutorial: Left Hand Crochet Solid Hexagon

Skill Level - Easy

Abbreviations
DC - Double Crochet
HDC - Half Double Crochet
CH - Chain
SL ST - Slip Stitch

Materials
Size I/5.5 mm crochet hook
4 ply yarn
Tapestry Needle

Note: I always use a chain 1 as the step up at the beginning of the round to create full stitches at the beginning of my work. The chain tends to leave gaps and holes. You can use other techniques for the beginning stitch on your round. The outcome will be the same.

Attach a slip knot to the crochet hook.
Make a chain of 4, join with the beginning chain.
Round 1: Work a chain 1, this will not count as a stitch, *Work 2 DC through the center of the chain, CH 2. Complete 5 times total from *. Work 2 more DC, CH 1, SC in the first stitch to join.

Round 2: Work a chain 1, this will not count as a stitch, *Work 2 DC through the same CH space, work 1 DC in ea of the next 2 stitches. Work 2 DC in the next CH 2 space, CH 2. Complete 5 times from *. Work 1 DC in ea of the next 2 stitches. Work 2 more DC, CH 1, SC in the first stitch to join.

Round 3: Work a chain 1, this will not count as a stitch, *Work 2 DC through the same CH space, work 1 DC in ea of the next 6 stitches. Work 2 DC in the next CH 2 space, CH 2. Complete 5 times from *. Work 1 DC in ea of the next 6 stitches. Work 2 more DC, CH 1, SC in the first stitch to join.

Round 4: Work a chain 1, this will not count as a stitch, *Work 2 DC through the same CH space, work 1 DC in ea of the next 10 stitches. Work 2 DC in the next CH 2 space, CH 2. Complete 5 times from *. Work 1 DC in ea of the next 10 stitches. Work 2 more DC, CH 1, SC in the first stitch to join.

Round 5: Work a chain 1, this will not count as a stitch, *Work 2 DC through the same CH space, work 1 DC in ea of the next 14 stitches. Work 2 DC in the next CH 2 space, CH 2. Complete 5 times from *. Work 1 DC in ea of the next 14 stitches. Work 2 more DC, CH 1, SC in the first stitch to join.

Round 7: Work a chain 1, this will not count as a stitch, *Work 2 DC through the same CH space, work 1 DC in ea of the next 22 stitches. Work 2 DC in the next CH 2 space, CH 2. Complete 5 times from *. Work 1 DC in ea of the next 22 stitches. Work 2 more DC, CH 1, SC in the first stitch to join.

  • I don't see a written pattern

  • @UnWrittenThoughts It is there now

  • I can crochet but mine never turns out as nice as yours does! I think it has something to do with the tension. I have tried to adjust but everything I make ends up looking lop sided. :(

  • @christyfaught If you are new to crochet, it may be stitch consistency, which is tension related. Just keep practicing and your stitches will start to be the same in size.

  • i dont crochet but was interested n watchint how too. nice vid

  • @passionatereader77 Thank you.

  • @KIESHACLARKE30 I'm having the same problem and I have no idea what to do! I'm doing it exactly right and I've done it enough times I thought I'd work out the kinks but it's still waving up. :(

  • Hi I love this pattern, however when I follow it, my hexagon is curling. I watch the video and yours is sitting nice and flat. I am getting the shape, and I end up the same place you do. am I doing something wrong? Help please, because I want to make a blanket using this shape.

  • would this work for a shawl?? and i love your slow motion

  • i want to crochet bolero but i don't know where to start and the style of crochet example double or half double crochet

  • For those who are having trouble getting their hexagon to lay flat, try doing "1dc, ch2, 1dc" in the corners instead of "2dc, ch 2, 2dc". Worked great for me :)

  • i have just done my first hexagon, its so easy thanks to you. I am also continuing with my granny squares using up scraps of yarn, and have joined these together and am continuing in a square all the way round, Couldn't have done it without your vids. xx
