Bright is the Ring of Words

English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams is known mainly for his symphonies, chamber music, opera, choral music and film scores. In his life, he endured both World Wars, becoming mostly deaf from his servitude in WWI. Nonetheless, he continued to produce works well after the age of sixty such as his late three symphonies Sinfonia Antartica, 8th Symphony, and Symphony No. 9 in E minor. Vaughan Williams is a central figure in music because of his long career as teacher, lecturer and acquaintance to so many younger composers. His writings on music remain, repeating his call for all persons to make their own music.
Bright is the Ring of Words appears in Vaughan Williams song cycle Songs of Travel (1904), a collection of nine songs that follow a wandering man and his journey from life to death. Bright is the Ring of Words, song eight in the cycle, along with Whither Must I Wander? encapsulates the whole cycle with the wanderer, now aged, looking ahead to his final journey beyond the grave.
