This is my rendition of the very well known song "Orinoco Flow" by Enya. I play the sound #44 - Pizzagogo on my Roland D-50, which are the same sound and synthesizer Enya used in this song (synth enthusiasts like me know very well how much the D-50 is used in Enya songs). The pad in the middle is played on my Juno 106 and is a very common PWMed string sound, with slow PWM, long release and chorus.
It's a very simple song, but I wanted to have some fun with the D-50 and share this with you ;-)
As usual, constructive comments or criticism are welcome!

  • Are (new) synthesizers with the Pizzagogo sound still available? I only have a Casio CA 100 (unbreakable and very dear to me) which goes upset when I press more than 4 keys at the same time.

The Pizzagogo sounds so amazing that when I found out about its name 10 minutes ago I was mind*censor*ed completely.

  • @RyouRan The Pizzagogo sound it's simply a pizzicato string sound layered with a warm pad, easily replicable with almost any keyboard out there. The only difference it's the sound's attack, which on the original D-50 Pizzagogo patch it's a bit more metallic and bright than a regular pizzicato string sound.

  • does she use any other synths that you can tell?

  • @BandOnTheRun87 Surely she uses other equipments and not only the Roland D-50 but onestly I don't know exactely what other synths. For example here: youtube[dot]com/watch?v=gWTMEvg-Pe4 Enya can be seen playing on a Roland Juno 60

  • @mima14031985 what is the difference between the D 50 and the Juno 60

  • @BandOnTheRun87 Completely different machines and sounds. The Juno 60 it's an analog synthesizer while the D-50 it's digital. If you're searching the early '80ies electronic sounds go for a Juno 60. If you want some very particular and sometimes cold/metallic sounds go for the D-50 (anyway this doesn't mean that the D-50 it's not capable to produce warm sounds).

I suggest to watch some Youtube demos of both instruments, they'll explain what I mean better than 1000 words.

  • @mima14031985 The meticallic attack is probably why I initially mistook the Pizzagogo for percussion instrument rather than a "pluck" in Orinoco Flow (I wonder if the attack is emphasised in Orinoco Flow because its Pizzagogo sounds a little different from the one used by others). When toying around with my good old keyboard I found out its Elec Guitar (a pizzicato sound) does resemple Pizzagogo to some extent. It only lacks the metallic attack, has "cooler" sound and poorer quality.

  • Very nice mate U play ever so well awesome tune. What's that bit in the middle i'm trying to fathem out the chords to? It's the part where I THINK it there's an Am7 & a couple of other chords? I've a collection of keyboaords including a roland juno G, I play & sing all time classics, record bits of my own stuff, Gary Numan, Kraftwerk & other covers but just a hobby though. I entertaine elderly day groups by singing & playing keyboard that I & they enjoy.

  • i have 2 Rolands D20 and D50

  • Thats why i love Roland!!!!!,the sound is wonderfull,i have a D20 (love on the first eye)
