Poor Circulation is a rare (i.e. not available on any official release) Television song. The song was part of the '78 live show that saw an official release in the early '80s called "The Blow Up". But inexplicably, Poor Circulation, though found on prior bootlegs of the same show, was not included on The Blow Up release. This version is from a July 25, 1975 Television show at The Piccadilly Inn, Cleveland. The band lineup at this time included Fred Smith on bass, as Richard Hell had left the group earlier in '75.

The lyrics seem to tell the tale of someone who has a very bad trip on LSD or other psychedelic, & who ends up temporarily in a psych ward as a result! Circumstantial evidence suggests the song just might be semi-autobiographical & that Tom may have had such an experience himself & later wrote this song about it.
-Tom in an interview once spoke about psychedelic drug use & said sometimes one had enjoyable experiences, but other times one had experiences so awful you never wanted to risk repeating them ever again!
-Tom once said in an interview that many of his Television songs describe or express personal experiences.
-At least once, Tom amusingly introduced the song "Poor Circulation" onstage as being called "If I Hadn't Lost My Head, I Wouldn't Have Lost My Hair"! Note use of the first person, "I", & it suggests Tom had long hair at the time, which hospital staff may have cut off after he was admitted.

So those are circumstantial evidence Exhibits A, B, & C the song may be autobiographical.Hey, just speculating.("...Prove it...Just the facts...Confidential") !

-I've also uploaded to YT two other unreleased songs from this same show, "Kingdom Come" & "Hard On Love",
as well as "Breakin' In My Heart" which Tom later released on his 1979 solo album "Tom Verlaine". And I've uploaded from another show earlier in '75 when Hell was still in the band, the unreleased song "UFO", plus some '74 recordings too...

  • I meant that they did not record it in the studio

  • @Voidoid91 Oh,you meant you are sorry it didn't make it onto a studio album.I agree.

Well, your English is much better than my Russian(or my French or any other lang.)!

I have a large collection of old Television articles/interviews.Song covers the band did (e.g. Psychotic Reaction,Fire Engine,Satisfaction,Knockin' on Heaven's Door)all got mentioned in articles as being covers.

Never a mention of Poor Circulation as being a cover.I think it's a Tom original,&nothing I see online says it's not.

  • Do you have a song a mi amore in good quality? I heard it in the movie "Blank generation" ,i think they recorded it with eno

  • @Voidoid91 No I don't. On a cassette tape somewhere I have a muddy quality recordingof Mi Amore. The version findable at You Tube is better & clearer, though I still don't know what a lot of the words are!

  • So sorry that they did not write this song.

  • @Voidoid91 Well, what's your evidence that Tom didn't write it, & if he didn't who did?
