LIHSSRD Finals at The Hampton Classic
On Monday, August 25th, LIHSSRD riders competed at The Hampton Classic for the finals This was the third year that The Hampton Classic be hosting the LIHSSRD Divisions. Our sponsor this year is Bridgehampton National Bank.

The Long Island Horse Show Series for Riders with Disabilities "LIHSSRD" is the first of its kind for riders with special needs. Four dedicated individuals who all have competed in Horse Shows throughout their lives; Nancy Henderson, Amy Stephenson, Lisa Zimmerman and Katie McGowan, created LIHSSRD in conjunction with HorseAbility; Therapeutic Riding Program, Hippotherapy Program and Summer Day Camp at The Thomas School of Horsemanship in Melville, NY.

Here at HorseAbility, we are continually growing, expanding, and developing new programming and opportunities for both new and current riders alike. HorseAbility has 2 horse shows for our riders to demonstrate their riding skills and give them an opportunity to show family and friends what they learn during their lessons. These shows are set up for 100% success and award all riders with ribbons and trophies that participate in the show. LIHSSRD brings this concept to the next level; the goal was to create an opportunity for riders with disabilities to experience the same thrill of competition at recognized horse shows as other riders do. The shows follow the guidelines of the United States Equestrian Federation, and are open to riders from the tri-state area. These shows include two divisions, one for riders requiring the assistance of a leader and/or sidewalkers, and the other for independent riders or those requiring a spotter. Each division includes a walk, walk-trot, and walk-trot and figure eight class. There is also a walk-trot-canter class open to independant riders. Five Long Island Rated Shows opened up a ring to these ground breaking divisions, along with our qualifying championship which was held at the Hampton Classic Horse Show in August. The top 20 riders who acquire the most points during the show season by competing in any or all of the local shows offered are invited to compete in the finals.

Riders are judged on Equitation, Demonstration and Knowledge of riding skills. In order to create a "level" competition information sheets are filled out to provide the judge with information about restrictions and exceptions that will be necessary for the riders on an individual basis. Arm bands are available for riders to wear which indicated a visual, auditory, or physical impairment. This assists the Judge in make a fair assessment while riders demonstrate their skills more complex.
