  • In 1952, CBS asked Murrow to anchor their TV coverage of the political conventions. He said he wanted to cover the convention for CBS radio. In 1952 there was a larger radio audience than TV audience. CBS felt that Douglas Edwards would be too tied up with his evening news broadcast, so they turned to a relativity new correspondent - Walter Cronkite. He was a hit, so CBS had him anchor all live special events, but Cronkite didn't start anchoring the evening news until 1962.

  • Is there any video of Will Rogers, Jr when he was on the CBS Morning Show? Particularly from the 1956 Chicago Convention? I ask, as I personally remember as a child, as he on live tv, rode his horse into the Conrad Hilton Hotel.

  • Cronkite anchored virtuually all of the Democratic and Republican National Presidential Conventions from 1952 through 1980. This is from the August 1956 Democratic convention, shortly after Adlai Stevenson won the nomination. Eric Severeid later delivered nightly commentaries on Cronkite's "CBS EVENING NEWS" from 1963 through 1977. Ed Murrow left CBS in January 1961. Because Westinghouse was the primary sponsor of CBS' coverage of the conventions, Betty Furness delivered their live ads as well.

  • this is great -- thank you for sharing. Do you know where or if it's possible to find Walter Conkite's show or filmstrips - I believe they were titled " and you were there" ?

  • Wow, this is just unbelievable and fascinating to watch! Thanks ever so much for posting this!

  • What a great print. Thanks Ira
