Midland Fire Chief Robert Isbell and Fire Investigator David Hickman evaluate the damage to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center located on 1802 West Wall Street after firefighters extinguished a backroom blaze Thursday night. Firefighters removed the burned filing cabinets and other furniture from the rear of the building to began assessing the cause and origin of the fire. The blaze began sometime shortly before 7 p.m., but the exact time is not known, Battalion Chief Ken Whiting told the Reporter-Telegram while on-scene. He said it appeared the fire was burning the contents of the filing room for sometime before the fire department was notified. Whiting described the damage to the room as severe but said the rest of the building seemed to have sustained only moderate smoke damage. The cause of the ignition is still under investigation, as of press time Thursday night.
