MAC is "private and unique address" to a specific computer, only concerned with LAN. IP is "public address" that is only concerned with WAN, changes with each internet session with recycled addresses. On WAN, a packet is sent via IP, when it finds correct LAN, it goes by MAC to identify which computer on that LAN recieves that packet (switch only, hub sends to every client on LAN until the rightful one recieves it and uses it).
