Sunnybrook Health Sciences discusses how the Google Search Appliance is revolutionizing information access within their hospital - for clinicians, administrators, medical students, and all employees. By being able to search all information in SharePoint, the intranet, multimedia training libraries, custom applications and the employee directory, Sunnybrook is setting a model for how healthcare institutions can benefit from providing the Google experience for their internal data. Oliver Tsai, Director of Information Technology at Sunnybrook, offers his insights.

Having gone through a similar exercise I wonder what steps were taken at Sunnybrook to ensure document classification and security were maintained. The downside can be widespread and unintentional publication of material not suitable for sharing. Did Sunnybrooke put any safeguards and enforsement in place to ensure sensitive information is not exposed?

The google search appliance allows you to cut the cost of training and maintaining an entire user base on how to work within the costly "portals" by simply making it avalable as if you were "googling" a recipe.
Put even more simpler. Pay ONE person to maintain the data repositories where documents are store, have a naming convention, and Life = simplified. As long as docs are named and filed properly, the search appliance does the rest. Anybody can google! As long as they can spell.
