The voice and finger belong to Prof Richard Gregory - British psychologist and Professor of Neuropsychology. He died last year (2010). Often used by British TV to explain basic psychology. Expert on optical illusions. Cool guy

I can see the hollow faces with both lights. I guess this was a bad version of hollowness...?

The problem is you are viewing complex vs simple shading. At no point do I see see the local rules of highlight vs shading contradicting what looks convex. the comparison of fruit crate vs face mask is apples to oranges. In the Charlie Chaplin mask examples, I find the illusion works just as well, and the timing of the destruction of illusion the same when the face is covered leaving the hat brim above only.
