LIFEDANCE by Gloria McLean, www.gloriamclean.com.
Gloria McLean is a dancer, choreographer and performance artist based in New York City and Andes, NY. From 1982-1993, she was a leading dancer with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, performing and teaching internationally. She founded LIFEDANCE/Gloria McLean and Dancers in 1987 as a vehicle for her choreography and collaborative projects, and her vision of the unity of life and art. Her pursuit of art through the medium of the body has led her from modern ("abstract") dance to performance pieces interacting with music, language, painting, drawing, sculpture, and most recently video. In over sixty works, her primary interest is revealing the primacy and immediacy of the body in ever changing contexts. She has presented full evenings of her work at the 92nd Street Y, Cunningham Studio, Dia Center for the Arts, Tenri Cultural Center, La Mama, The Kitchen, and at Squid, a center for independent dance which she co-founded and ran from 1994-2005. Her work has also been presented at the American Dance Festival, the Vision Festival, Performance Mix, Dixon Place, Judson Church, American Dance Guild, Studio 303 Montreal, Joyce Soho, et al. She has performed in festivals and venues in Ireland, Paris, Berlin, Switzerland, Japan, Korea, and China. Known as a master teacher, McLean was the Henry Bascom Visiting Professor at University of Wisconsin/Madison in 2000. She has also taught fulltime at George Washington University, adjunct at Dowling College, and as a guest artist at many universities including Hofstra University, American University, Oberlin College, University of Texas, and The Performance Lab, an experiment in teaching through interactive television and web-based media. Ms. McLean holds a BA in Philosophy from Connecticut College, and an MFA in Dance from Hollins University.
