counter tenors refers to the voice timbre they achieve using the falsetto, baritone or tenors can have an alto, mezzo or even soprano range using this technique, they sing mostly baroque music because back then the main male roles were composed for Castrati. in the last 10 years baroque music has become very popular so now we see a lot of counter tenors popping up everywhere it's become sort of a fad, like castrati were in their day
