Taken from the 1980's BBC series "King of Instruments", Gillian Weir plays "Moto Ostinato" from 'Sunday Music' by Petr Eben at the organ of the Hedvig Eleonora, Stockholm. I fell in love with this piece and the instrument and have watched this clip many many times over the years. Dame Gillian's performance is stunning and been a source of inspiration for me and my love of organs.

  • @Sesquiltera I don't mind Bish, but I think many others will agree that they are NOT in the same league. Dame Gillian is supremacy embodied. Diane is merely a virtuoso, but fabulous nonetheless.

  • One of my teachers...I'm going back 23 years now (I'm 40), Ian Sadler passed on something to me that I never forgot. Dame Gillian had said this, "Virtuosity is 'control' ". How true it is. I'm glad I learned that at that age, when my nickname was Speedy Gonzales! (at that time with loads of technique I didn't know what to do with, I played everything so bloody fast!) Now, her words ring so much truer than they would have at that time. Here is perfect evidence of that manifesto.

  • @GJmusique

I'm sure Dame Gillian would not have the time to answer such a trivial email lol.

  • @mattbod

Why not ask her? She's not dead. Yet. :)

  • Great playing! which cathdral with the small organ loft does she refer in the rather morbid anecdote before playing?

  • Great clip and typically brilliant Gillian Weir playing. Was Morbidly fascinated by the "small organ loft/ fire brigade" story: wonder which UK Cathedral she means?

  • @AndrewLuckett22 The piece is Toccata in G by Theodore Dubois. It's in G. Schirmer's Library Vol. 649, Th. Dubois, Twelve Pieces. Also, it appears in lots of other anthologies. Good luck!

  • @hazrob Thank you
