Canoe571, you said it all! I thought that lick in the second solo was GENIUS.

I heard Earl say, in an interview, that he often got messed up in a tune, but invented a way to get out of it, on the spot, so that nobody knew the difference. I guess most of us would think it was a pretty fancy lick he'd invented, instead of recognizing trouble. You can do that if you're good.

hard to believe Earl wasn't even nominated for a Nobel Prize for inventing bluegrass banjo picking. That is a grave injustice (or as Uncle Josh would say, a "graves injustice". Long may he wave and thank you Mr. Scruggs.

I know most of you caught it, but if you didn't, what Lester was talking about after the song when he asked Earl if his banjo was having a problem was when Earl got hung up in the strings at :54. You didn't see that happening that often to Earl. He was THE master.

A lot of people do not realize that Earl wrote so many pieces that he played: Foggy Mountain Breakdown, Earl;s Breakdown, Randy Lynn Rag, etc. I heard him say on an interview that he played by ear, and did not read music. Of course, most old time musicians played by ear.
