www.chem.ucl.ac.uk/ice: Here is the answer to how salt dissolves in water from computer simulations on some of the world's largest supercomputers. The large (yellow) chlorine ion at the corner of the crystal leaves first, as it leaves in becomes increasingly coordinated (bonded) to water molecules in the aqueous film above. This work has been published in Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics Volume 13, pages 13162-13166 (2011).
