"The NYTimes is reporting that the ambassadors of 19 countries will not be attending this week's Nobel Peace Prize ceremony awarding the prize to imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.

The peace prize committee reported Monday on its website that 44 embassies in Oslo, the capital of Norway, intended to send representatives to Friday's ceremony, however, the number of invitation declines has now risen to 19.

In a show of pressure from China to boycott the event because of what the country views as a Western ploy to undermine the Chinese communist party's power, 18 other countries have backed out from the ceremony. These include: Russia, Kazakhstan, Colombia, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Serbia, Iraq, Iran, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Venezuela, the Philippines, Egypt, Sudan, Ukraine, Cuba and Morocco.

The prize committee notes that, for the first time since 1936, the medal and diploma that accompany the prize will not be handed over because neither the jailed awardee nor members of his family have been permitted to travel to Oslo to receive them."

  • @5687678 Now it's only a mere tool to incite political influence.

  • After Obama was awarded the organization lost it's creditability.

  • Isn't this a sign of cowardice of d Philippine government lining themselves up among the 19 countries boycotting the NPP ceremony ...haha along with Kazakhstan , Afghanistan,Iraq ? Whaaat? How embarrassing ! I thought this country has matured into defending democracy

whoa .Can't believe my brain when I read this. This just shows how totally deluded the Philippine President is.O' well same as his mum, yellow lady late Cory who freed Sison ,now living a good life/ partying n d Netherlands.

  • That son of a bitch Chinese looking Philippine president needs to sacked asap. He's been causing one blunder after another for Filipinos. How appalling to see our country alongside Communist and terrorist havens. The Philippines has always been the strongest Democracy in Asia and he failed to send a delegation????

  • Experts said that the reason behind The Philippines boycotting the event is because the RP government is afraid that China might get mad at us because one of the awardee is a Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo who is fighting for Human Rights in China and he is behind bars.

  • I was shocked to find out that The Philippines is among the 19 countries boycotting the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony. What? Mr. Aquino are you kidding me? I called these countries "League of Lunatics" and I was sad that my own country is one of them.
