  • Just watched it in history...

  • An unforgettable film which explores the role of the Jesuits in Paraguay, and their suppression, and ho both affected the native people who they were briefly able to protect from the Portuguese. But it is also a film that pits the ethics of force against the ethics of submissive love, and liberation theology against a more tradritional devotion. It also touches on the dignity of human beings in God, and our need to repent of wrongdoing and move on. A classic film.

  • brazil was a colony for max exploitatgion and basically you could run your own slave camp there and live your sociopathic phantasys with blacks and indians for profit that no one would say a thing, murder was legal, you just had to pay the king their share, and when they found gold in brasil things got worse... only in late 18 century they stoped it

  • However, historians argue that Pombal’s "enlightenment," while far-reaching, was primarily a mechanism for enhancing autocracy at the expense of individual liberty and especially an apparatus for crushing opposition, suppressing criticism, and furthering colonial economic exploitation as well as intensifying print censorship and consolidating personal control and profit.

  • Pombal introduced many fundamental administrative, educational, economic, and ecclesiastical reforms justified in the name of "reason" and instrumental in advancing secularization.

  • Pombal is notable for his swift and competent leadership in the aftermath of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. He implemented sweeping economic policies in Portugal to regulate commercial activity and standardize quality throughout the country. Pombal was instrumental in weakening the grip of the Inquisition. The term Pombaline is used to describe not only his tenure, but also the architectural style which formed after the great earthquake.

  • Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Count of Oeiras, 1st Marquess of Pombal (13 May 1699–8 May 1782) was an 18th century Portuguese statesman. He was Minister of the Kingdom (the equivalent to a today's prime minister) in the government of Joseph I of Portugal from 1750 to 1777. Undoubtedly the most prominent minister in the government, he is considered today to have been the de facto head of government.

  • @KSudbury Protect from the Portuguese? That time was under Marquês de Pombal rule, and as a atheist person, he was very pragmatic. He prohibited Native Americans slavery. So what were they protecting them from? That film is biased and do not take in account the historical developments at the time.

  • Un film indimenticabile....un capolavoro.... un opera davvero ispirata....

  • jesuitas españoles un gran ejemplo para todos
