Exactly :-) He salutes kind of in a hurry, as to say "I'll quickly salute this private so I can leave" He sees in Joker not only his moral superior, but he is also confronted with his "moral antagonist". The colonel faces the fact that his opinions about the war may not be so true after all. This makes him unfomfortable and he hurries the salute to leave. Again, just my analysis and conclusions, but as with good literature, good movies provoke discussion and thought.

You're welcome :-) It's just my analysis of this scene, but in all modesty I think there is truth in it. I've seen this movie many times and after a while you start seeing the message of the movie reflected in even the smaller scenes and details. I actually think the whole movie is mainly about the duality of man. A concept reflected in many war movies, especially about the Vietnam war (like Platoon and Apocalypse Now for example)

and that's explains the funny salute the coronel makes at the end too :)

@greedkiller Hey man.... thanks...... that was really deep........make sense.....

The colonel initiates the salute because he is dumbfounded by the quote about Jung and the duality of man. He outranks Joker, but in general knowledge he is "lower in rank" so to speak. Also Joker and the other men know the truth about the war in Vietnam; it's a losing game. The colonel speaks about the "Big Win" and "Peace craze" he has no clue. This all is illustrated by the colonel saluting his "moral superior"

@neckarsulme not necesary just have to be a good observer.... watch the black hawk down movie in the scene when captain Steele names Sgt Eversman as leader fo the chalk four... At the end captain Steel wait for the salute of the sgt.. the Sgt says : Rangers lead the way... then Capt Steele returns the salute saying "all the way" :)

@calito44 I noticed that as well, the subordinate salutes first, and waits for the superior to drop his salute before he drops his. Military people will usually notice this.

Am I the only one who just turned off Fullmetaljacket after the middlepoint?
The beginning was awesome, but as soon as the half way mark hit, I was bored shitless.
Idk, maybe it's just me, but I'm kinda picky with movies. x.x

@CheIseaSmiIe Yeah, the second half can get boring but if you watch it objectively, it's fantastic.

I'm actually so surprised HOW many people know where my name comes from, considering this film is not popcorn fluff and older than most my subscribers. Nice post, this movie is THE greatest Vietnam film, fuck Platoon, this has the heart.
