I experienced something similar a few years ago in England . A noisy ( electrically active ) frontal system approached it was a distinctly brown in colour , as it came overhead we got a very strong hail storm of 1/4" hail stones this lasted about 15 minutes then subsided to steady gentle snow which lasted about 6 hours , and deposited approx 5" of snow on the ground.
